Transforming the way we work and live with cloud technology
Cloud technology is changing the way we work and preserve information, whether for work, hobbies, or personal memories. Systems on cloud save data to a secure server instead of taking up a computer’s storage space (although you can still save a backup on your device). When Internet access is available, the system will automatically retrieve and sync your data across devices.
How are we using cloud technology in our daily lives?
- Google Docs or Word 365 are commonly used tools for office productivity. Besides letting you work on the go from various devices; you can also grant viewing and editing access to others. Even better, you can track the changes made by others in real-time and go back and forth various revisions. This practice removes the need for multiple email exchanges going back and forth on revisions and multiple file versions. This is dramatically changing the way we work collaboratively from anywhere, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic.
- We use online storage services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud to back up our personal and work data or send large files that can’t fit into an email or chat message. All you need is Internet access and a web browser. This is slowly removing the need for DVD burners and USB flash drives except for off-site backups or of very large amounts of data.
- Even our communications such as WhatsApp chats are backed up on cloud. So we can be texting from our mobile device and, then effortlessly switch to our laptop or desktop, via WhatsApp Web, with no disruption.
- Cloud technology is replacing expensive dedicated software with browser-based alternatives. These do just about anything from graphic or website design to HR and payroll. Better yet, you don’t need to install anything on your device. You also pay as you use, or via a subscription that fits your immediate needs and budget.
Whether we realise it or not, cloud technology is a part of our everyday life and has transformed the way we use technology. It’s the future, today.
Next, we’ll look at how cloud computing is now changing the way we do business.
